Yesterday CBS sent shock waves through Hollywood when they made the surprise announcement that their hit comedy series “Mom” would conclude in May at the end of its eight season. The series finale with air on May 6 at 9pm EST.

When the show premiered in the fall of 2013, it centered around newly sober single mother Christie, played by Anna Faris, raising her pregnant teenage daughter and young son. In the pilot, Christie reconnects with her estranged mother Bonnie (Allison Janney) who is also in recovery. Janney earned two Emmys in the Supporting Actress in a comedy series for her performance in the early seasons of the show. She eventually earned nominations in the Lead Actress, Comedy category.

As the series progressed, the show shifted away from the kid centric stories, eventually writing both kids off the show. The show found its groove when it focused on Christie, Bonnie and their friends from their AA meeting.

The all female ensemble focusing on women supporting each other as they worked on their sobriety, relationship struggles and the challenges of aging, struck comedic gold. Anna Faris departed the series before the start of the current season, sending her character Christie off to Georgetown Law School on a full scholarship. Even without Christie, the show hasn’t skipped a beat and still delivers solid storytelling.

I always thought “Mom” was a funny show with a lot of heart. My only criticism is the lack on onscreen diversity. While Oscar winner Octavia Spencer had a short stint in a recurring role it would have been nice if a woman of color had been included among the main cast.

All in all, the cast and crew of “Mom” should be proud of the stories they’ve told over eight seasons. They gave voice to those in the world who struggle with addiction. They showed that by doing the work and having a support system, addiction doesn’t have to define you.
