One of the most underrated sitcoms of the 2000s is “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” The series aired on CBS from 2006-2010, earning series star Julia Louis-Dreyfus an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
The show follows newly divorced Christine, who is trying to navigate her new life as a single mother and business owner. She’s also best friends with her ex-husband who is now dating a younger woman also named Christine. In the pilot she’s labeled “New Christine” leaving our heroine as “Old Christine.”
Along for the ride are Christine’s brother Matthew, her friend Barb and son Richie. Although Richie drives a lot of Christine’s motivation, the boy isn’t a prominent onscreen character. The show is really about the adults and their shenanigans.
“The New Adventures of Old Christine” is a fun and funny show. It’s now streaming on HBO Max and I was highly entertained revisiting this comfort food sitcom. The show was unceremoniously cancelled by CBS at the end of its fifth season, so Christine didn’t get the send off she deserved, The fifth season finale set up what would have been an interesting sixth season sending Christine into uncharted territory at her age.
