In a year filled with a global pandemic, death and financial strife, one of the bright spots of 2020 was HBO’s “Insecure”. Every with Sundays this summer, Issa and her crew allowed us to momentarily escape from our woes. Today, HBO and series creator Issa Rae announced that the upcoming fifth season will be the series’ last.
“Insecure” has been one of the best shows on television the past four years. It has told the story of contemporary Black love and ambition in a way no other show ever has on television. In “Insecure” Issa Rae allowed Black characters to just breath and live. While the show never shied away from the challenges of being Black in the world, it also allowed its characters to celebrate their blackness unapologetically.
While I appreciate that the show wants to end on a creative high note, it’s still disappointing to think about life without Issa, Molly and crew.
The show’s fourth season earned its first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series. It lost to the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” which swept all the comedy categories. Maybe it was a precursor for “Insecure’s” final year of Emmy contention!
With all the scripts written for the final season, production is set to resume soon. The show will probably air sometime this summer.
