Netflix has released it’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “The Prom.”

The movie, directed by Ryan Murphy, stars Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington and Andrew Rannells.

Also featured among the main cast is a woefully miscast James Corden.

The film itself is enjoyable. I didn’t see the Broadway musical, but the film feels very familiar and comfortable. Meryl Streep dazzles as an aging star. There are a couple of numbers that aren’t perfect, but overall its a fun film.

The film focuses on a high school girl living in small Indiana town, who after coming out as a lesbian, is exiled from her family and group of friends. When prom season comes around, she announces she’s bringing her girlfriend as her date causing backlash from the bigots on the PTA.

Streep, Corden, Rannells and Kidman play actors who, having hit a few bumps in their careers , decided to use the prom controversy as an opportunity for some PR rehab. The zany group arrive in the small town and with their flashy song and dance numbers, help bring (some) tolerance to the community.

“The Prom” is a feel good musical with important themes. There are so many LGBTQ+ youth in the country, and around the world, who struggle with acceptance from their family, friends and community and the musical speaks directly to them.

Setting the action around a high school prom addresses obstacles LGBTQ+ face as they try to enjoy the same coming of age rites of passage as their heterosexual peers.
