OWN has acquired the syndication rights to the former WGN America historical drama “Underground.”
The series starring Jurnee Smollett aired for two season on WGN America.
Set in 1857, “Underground” depicts a group of African American heroes in their flight to freedom. Each episode will have newly filmed introductions by cast members and will include never-before-seen behind the scenes footage.
The series was co-created by Misha Green who has received critical acclaim this year as the creator of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country.”

Fans of “Underground” were disappointed when WGN America cancelled the series and there were petitions for other networks to continue production of the show, including OWN.
“Underground” will premiere on OWN Tuesday, January 5 at 9pm EST.
