Oscar winning actress Regina King makes her feature film directorial debut with “One Night in Miami.” The film will have its theatrical release on December 25, making it eligible for Oscar contention.
On January 15, the film will debut on streaming service Amazon Prime.
“One Night in Miami” is a fictionalized account of a meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke in a Miami hotel room in 1964.
The group gathers there to celebrate Ali’s title win over Sonny Liston.
The movie is based on the Kemp Powers stage play of the same name. Powers also wrote the screenplay.
Critics have been quite positive about the movie with lots of Oscar buzz surrounding it.
“Hamilton’s” Leslie Odom Jr. stars as Sam Cooke along with Kingsley Ben-Adair as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Muhammad Ali and Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown. Recent Emmy winner Jasmine Cephas Jones joins her Hamilton co-star, Odom, as Cooke’s wife, Barbara.
King recently announced that she would be executive producing a pilot for The CW called “Slay”.
