If you’re a fan of high school dramas, Netflix has a show in “Grand Army” you will be interested in watching.

The series is by creator Katie Cappiello, based on her play “Slut: The Play”.

“Grand Army” focuses on five students who attend the largest public school in Brooklyn, New York. Each student is struggling with their own issues. Each of them are well defined.

The show deals with sexual assault, homosexuality, homophobia, racism and mental health, but it’s not as dark HBO’s “Euphoria”.

The five leads are fresh new talent, although the breakout star is Odley Jean who plays Dominique Pierre, a Haitian-American, star of the women’s basketball team. Dominique is smart and driven, but under the stress of events happening at home she ultimately starts to crumble and her arc is fascinating.

Odessa A’zion, who plays party girl Joey, shines in the role.  Her story arc is heart wrenching and A’zion pulls off every beat.

The show services the needs of fans of teen dramas adequately. There are characters and storylines that could have used a little more flushing out, but given the first season is only 9 episodes, “Grand Army” solidly accomplishes telling the main stories.

I was disappointed by the last moments of the season finale, but I think it was written to give viewers closure in case there’s not a season two.

Check out the trailer for “Grand Army” below and drop a comment and let me know what you think of the show.
