Writer, director and executive producer Justin Simien brings his latest film “Bad Hair” to Hulu.

No, this is not a sequel to the Chris Rock documentary, “Good Hair”, although the two films do share one thing in common. Both examine the relationship between Black women and their hair and society.

But unlike the Chris Rock vehicle, “Bad Hair” is fiction and a horror film. Set in the 1980s, the film also feels like it was made during that decade. That’s not a knock, just an observation about the directing approach Simien took.

The story starts with Anna (Elle Lorraine), who works as a put upon assistant at a Black-centric lifestyle network. The arrival of a new network head, played deliciously by Vanessa Williams, gives Anna career opportunities that eluded her for the past four years.

There’s just one rub, Anna’s new boss wants her to ditch her natural hair style for one that she believes is more socially acceptable. It’s made clear to Anna that keeping her natural style will limit her opportunities at the network.

Anna relents and gets a weave done by the much sought after stylist Virgie (Laverne Cox). While most of her peers love her new look, Anna soon discovers that her hair has a murderous mind of its own.

I’m not going to drop any spoilers, but the film does have some jump worthy moments. It’s also got some humor, which is always a hallmark of a fun horror film. This is a complicated topic that might be better suited written and directed by a Black woman.

What I like about “Bad Hair” is that it’s a horror film with all female leads. While there are a few male characters in the film, they’re only there to help move the plot along and not to ultimately save the day. As the song says the sisters are doing it for themselves.
