The HBO limited series Watchmen dominated the Emmy nominations today with 26 nods including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for star, Regina King, who won previously in this category for her performance in the Netflix series 7 Seconds. I think she’s the favorite to take home the award this year as well. Watchmen should also be favored to win at the ceremony this September.
Other noteworthy nominees include the HBO comedy Insecure garnering seven nominations for its stellar third season, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress (Issa Rae) and Supporting Actress (Yvonne Orji).
The NBC comedy The Good Place was the only broadcast series to earn an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination. The other nominees are, Dead to Me, Insecure, The Kominsky Method, What We Do in the Shadows, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Schitt’s Creek. This is a crazy competitive category. I think it’s a three way race between Insecure, Dead to Me and Schitt’s Creek.
Schitt’s Creek garnered a series best 15 nominations for its final season, including nods for all four of its core actors, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy.
On the drama side, broadcast tv was totally shut out with all nominees coming from cable and streaming services. The HBO drama Succession earned 18 nominations, tying with Netflix’s Ozark. The nominees in the category also include The Mandalorian, The Crown, Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve and Stranger Things.
The Emmys will air Sunday, September 20th from 8pm-11pm EST on ABC.
