If you haven’t seen the documentary Paris is Burning, get yourself together and watch it now! No Pride month is complete without this stellar account of the New York City ball culture and the LGBTQ+, Black and Latinos that made up the community
The ball competitions are structured events in which contestants must adhere to a very specific categories or theme and then walk a runway and be judged, harshly. But for all the competition, the documentary shows how queer people were able to build a community where they felt safe when they couldn’t find that in their own lives.
Paris is Burning has been essential viewing in the LGBTQ+ community, but anyone wanting to learn more about our community will find this documentary a valuable resource.
I honestly can’t do the film justice, you have to watch it. It’s amazing.
