Hulu’s comedy series Ramy is now available on the streaming service. The series follows Ramy, a first generation American Muslim” who is looking for his place in the world given the challenges of living in the Egyptian community but wanting acceptance in broader American society.
Ramy star and co-creator Ramy Youssef won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his season 1 performance. While Youssef is the central character in the series, there were stand-alone episodes focused on his character’s mother and his sister. The fourth episode of the first season was particularly important as it flashed back to Ramy’s childhood and showed how his relationship with his non-Muslim friends changed after the September 11 attacks. It was so personal and intimate and gave a unique perspective about that time in our history not seen by lead characters on tv series.
I loved season 1 and looking forward to starting season 2 this weekend. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali joins the series in a recurring role as Ramy’s spiritual advisor.
If you haven’t watched Ramy, I highly recommend a season 1 binge.
