In my quest to find entertainment content outside of traditional broadcast and cable providers I’ve recently discovered three streaming apps that are definitely worth your attention. Each serves niche consumers by providing stellar user experiences.

URBAN MOVIE CHANNEL (UMC) – Created by BET founder Robert L. Johnson, UMC offers a mix of dramas, comedies, horrors and documentaries aimed at the African American audience. One of the best features about UMC is how it has embraced Black women as producers and directors. The platform has also become a place where new Black talent either on or behind the screen is nurtured. A prime example of this is “The Rich and The Ruthless”, a satirical look behind the scenes of a daytime soap, executive produced and directed by Victoria Rowell, most notably known for her onscreen work on “The Young & the Restless” and co-written by rising star Jamey Giddens. UMC offers a free 7 day trail and a monthly subscription for $6.99.

THE FILM DETECTIVE = This app curates restored classic films, mostly now found in the public domain. Viewers have a buffet of genres to choose from, including comedy, western and classic tv. The site is refreshed monthly and offers custom introductions to a lot of the content along with other special features. For those who aren’t quite ready to commit, The Film Detective has a catalogue of content offered for free. This app is a bargain at only $3.99/month or $34.99/year.

BRITBOX – This spectacular app curates the best that British television has to offer. From TV movies, comedies and soap operas, for any fan of content from across the pond, this app is for you. The app is updated on a daily basis so if you’re fan of soaps, “Eastenders” or “Emmerdale” you can get your fix everyday. In BritBox you can mark programs under your “Watchlist”, so you don’t have to scroll thru their entire library looking for your favorite programs. The interface is clean and easy to use. BRITBOX offers a 7 day free trail and if you become hooked like I did it’s $6.99/month.

Aside from the great and compelling content on these apps, the flexibility of the subscriptions is key. You’re not locked in and can cancel at any time. As you’re settling in for some long winter nights, give one or all of these streaming apps a try and let me know what you think!
